A Different Kind of Sales Challenge
On July 7, I had the opportunity to work with Merchants Bonding Company as a sales consultant, and it was a strong reminder that not every sales strategy should be built around volume alone.
Merchants Bonding Company underwrites surety bonds, typically for construction and commercial projects. Their Mid-Atlantic team, based in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, relies on relationships with agents who can bring them into the right opportunities. In that kind of environment, those relationships are not a side benefit. They are the growth strategy.
At Superhuman Prospecting, we spend a lot of time helping companies create pipeline through disciplined outbound effort. Many of our clients need consistent activity at scale. That often means calling 100 contacts a month at minimum, and in some cases, reaching into the thousands. In those situations, success depends on creating relevance quickly and earning attention early.
This engagement was different.
When the Market Is Small, the Margin for Error Shrinks
The Merchants team is working in a highly targeted market with a limited number of viable relationship paths. They are not looking at an endless list of prospects. They may have 20 potential agents in a territory with no existing relationship, plus another 30 where some level of familiarity is already in place.
That changes the rules.
In a high-volume outbound environment, you can test messaging, refine your approach, and move fast because the market gives you room to adjust. In a relationship-driven territory like this one, every interaction carries more weight. If you push too hard, sound too scripted, or show up too early with a sales agenda, you are not just losing one conversation. You may be reducing your total addressable opportunity in that market.
That is why I told the team that they cannot approach these agents the way a typical sales development team might approach a larger outbound list. The mechanics of sales still matter, but the sequence matters more.
Why Trust Has to Come First
In most of my work, I help teams tighten resonance, sharpen messaging, and improve execution so value is clear from the first interaction. That still matters here, but the ratio needs to change.
For this team, I would flip the usual balance. Instead of spending most of their effort on direct sales activity, they need to spend the majority of it becoming known, credible, and easy to trust. The sales conversation should follow that foundation, not lead it.
That is where one of the most important principles in outbound sales applies: slow the process, speed the trust.
At Superhuman Prospecting, we have seen this play out across industries. When the market is tight and the relationships are long-term, forcing urgency too early usually backfires. The better approach is to create familiarity, show sound judgment, and let credibility build through consistent, thoughtful contact. Once trust is established, momentum comes faster and with less resistance.
When your accounts are also part of your business community, people know the difference between a transactional pitch and a professional relationship. One gets ignored. The other earns access.
Why I’m Confident in What Comes Next
I am confident this team will grow its agent relationships this year because the offering is relevant, the need is real, and the people are capable. They do not need louder sales tactics. They need a sales approach that matches the reality of their market.
That is also what I enjoy most about consulting at this stage of my career. Ten years ago, I had a knack for sales. Today, the value comes from experience: working with more than 1,600 businesses across 50 industry combinations and seeing firsthand how buyers respond in different environments.
That perspective helps me do what I care about most: help sales teams succeed with approaches that actually fit the way their market buys.
